Patient Guide
Wisdom Tooth Surgery Care
General care guidance after wisdom tooth surgery.

Before the Procedure
- This guide mostly covers aftercare.
- Before surgery, let your doctor know about any underlying condition, medications, drug allergies, and medical history.
- If your doctor has requested imaging or any specific preparation, complete it before surgery.
After the Procedure
- Keep sterile gauze over the surgical site with gentle pressure for about 2 hours.
- Stick to soft foods during the first week.
- Avoid straws and any suction for two weeks — suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to severe pain or dry socket.
- Use a cold compress on day one; skip it on day two, and from day three a warm towel may be used, as your doctor advises.
- A small amount of oozing for up to two days can be normal. Don't spit — if needed, press a cold, damp sterile gauze on the area for about half an hour.
- Maintain oral hygiene with a soft brush and mouthwash as directed.
- After rinsing your mouth, tilt your head and let the liquid fall out gently — do not spit.
- Stitches are usually removed about a week later.
- Pain for up to about 3 days and swelling or bruising for up to about a week can be normal.
- Limited jaw opening for up to about 10 days can be normal — only begin jaw exercises as instructed.
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping.
- Avoid tobacco and alcohol for two weeks.
- Take antibiotics and any prescribed medication on schedule.
- Don't use mouthwash for longer than recommended.
