General care guidance before and after chin surgery.

Genioplasty Care

Before the Procedure

  • Before surgery, let your doctor know about your medications, any underlying conditions, drug allergies, and prior surgery or hospitalization.
  • If your doctor has requested photographs, lab tests, or imaging, complete these before surgery.
  • Coordinate with your doctor about smoking, alcohol, and blood-thinning medication.

After the Procedure

  • Use a cold compress for the first 48 hours, usually in intervals with rest periods between.
  • Keep your head elevated above body level while sleeping and resting.
  • Take prescribed medication as your doctor directs.
  • Avoid strenuous activity, exercise, and heavy lifting for two weeks.
  • Stick to soft, lukewarm foods and avoid chewing anything hard.
  • Maintain careful oral hygiene, and use mouthwash if prescribed.
  • Change the chin tape or bandage only as your doctor has shown you.
  • Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness are normal in the first days and gradually ease.
  • Numbness in the lower lip or chin may last a few weeks to a few months and usually improves over time.
  • Avoid smoking, hookah, and alcohol for 4 weeks.
  • Protect the chin area from any impact until healing is complete.
  • The final result can be properly assessed after swelling fully subsides, over the following months.
